So let’s explore this Cambodian island, one of the best tropical islands in Southeast Asia, Koh Rong!

Welcome to paradise island Koh Rong

Koh Rong is located in the southern part of Cambodia and belongs to one of the most beautiful islands. Koh Rong is a small island, with several white-sand beaches and tropical vibes. You can only find several roads on Koh Rong, so there is no way you can get lost.

If you are looking at the map of Koh Rong you will notice that Koh Rong is located very close to Thailand. You also probably heard about Koh Rong Samloem which is the smaller brother of Koh Rong located further south.

Also, if you are planning to visit Thailand you can easily get to another paradise island called Koh Kood, which is located quite close to the Cambodian border.

If you would like to get to Koh Rong from mainland Cambodia, you need to get to a small village called Sihanoukville first. There are many bus connections that go from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville.

Sihanoukville is not the prettiest town and at times it appears a bit dodgy, however, it is a gateway to Koh Rong.

The bus from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville takes around six hours and usually costs $10 per person. Once you get to Sihanoukville, make sure to book your ferry tickets to Koh Rong right away as they tend to sell out pretty fast.

If you would like to make the best out of your time, we strongly recommend you take the earliest ferry you can get from Sihanoukville to Koh Rong Island.

It was a big struggle to get tickets as staff in the toursit office wasn’t very helpful. But somehow we managed. The ferry companies offer usually return tickets and we paid $22 per person.

Make sure to communicate where are you going and where is your hotel located on Koh Rong as there are three stops along the way. Also, some companies do not go to all the three piers, so make sure to ask for that as well.

We had our hotel located on Coconut Beach and it wasn’t very easy to get there. Coconut Beach is located on the western side of Koh Rong and ferries only go there if the weather permits it.

If it’s windy, the waves will pick up and the boat cannot make it around the bay. And ferries won’t continue further. That actually happened to us. We had to wait about five hours on the main pier until we could get to the Coconut Beach. At some point we didn’t expect to get there at all.

It was also a stressful situation as none of the staff didn’t know when the ferry is going, because of the weather. We didn’t waste time and went for lunch and then we walked all the way to 4K beach, which was absolutely wonderful.

travel guide to Koh Rong in Cambodia with all things you need to know

One of the best things to do on Koh Rong Island is to explore all the beaches. And there is so much you should be looking forward to. Every beach on Koh Rong has white sand with many palm trees around.

We stayed three nights on the Coconut Beach and we really loved our location. We were so happy that we got there.

Coconut Beach is really a beautiful beach with a relaxing atmosphere.

We stayed at Nice beach Bungalow and we had our hut right on the beach.

Coconut Beach is not very long and you can easily walk to the end of the beach where you’ll find Coconut Beach Bungalows. Right there, is a very nice restaurant with gorgeous views overlooking the ocean.

There are also several restaurants on Coconut Beach, and they have all a very nice vibe. We particularly loved CocoHut Restaurant as they have affordable lunch and dinner options.

This is the beach where you usually arrive at Koh Rong Community pier. There are many bars located and it is a really beautiful beach with white sand. We had a nice drink at Bamboo Pizza Restaurant.

As the name already says, this beach is exactly 4 km of pure white sugary sand. The only difference to the other beaches is that it doesn’t have many coconut trees around. We walked here from the main pier which was a nice jungle walk. It took us around 40 mins.

Long Beach or also called Royal Beach is located on the west side of Koh Rong island and one of the best spots to view the sunset.

Another creative name, right? Long Beach is really long, in total 14 km long and it is located in the northern part of Koh Rong, in the town Sok San.

Around Sok San, there is also a small waterfall if you are tired of beaching around and would like to cool down.

This is the first thing you need to do. If you are staying on Coconut Beach (or on any other beach on Koh Rong), you need to drink some coconuts. Otherwise, I am afraid, your holidays on Koh Rong are not complete.

There was also a possibility to go for a yoga class directly on the beach. Make sure to ask your hotel staff to get more information on schedules. I paid $10 for 1-hour of yoga.

Life on Koh Rong is slow and this is the perfect time to embrace island life by doing nothing at all. Grab a book and enjoy the sound of the ocean.

Did you know that on Koh Rong you can see bioluminescence at night?

One night on Koh Rong we went alone to see it for ourselves and it was one of the most fascinating experiences we’ve had in Cambodia. Don’t forget to bring your snorkeling goggles to see the beauty of bioluminescence.

I have to say that it is a bit scary to be in the water in complete darkness and not be able to see a thing. But on the other hand, it is a very spectacular experience. Especially to see the green light around you every time you make a movement. I felt like a twinkling fairy.

INTERESTING FACT: Bioluminescence is not that uncomon and can be seen in many animals, from small microorganisms to sharks. A light which you can see is the production and emission of light by a living organism. To see bioluminescence you need to have very little light pollution.

Except for chilling on the beach and doing nothing at all, you have also the possibility to be more adventurous.

If you would like to learn how to scuba dive, there are also a couple of dive shops around Koh Rong located on Koh Rong Community pier, where you can also get your scuba dive certificate.

I can imagine that there are not so many corals around Koh Rong Island, but you can still see some tropical fish. We didn’t really go snorkeling as the wind was strong and the waves were big, so I hope you will be luckier than us.

We really like to kayak around, as it is a great replacement for excising and enjoying turquoise waters at the same time. Ask at the reception for the prices.

Another great thing to do on Koh Rong Island is to rent a scooter and drive around. Just bear in mind that the paths are mostly gravel roads with many holes (Cambodian style), so you need to drive carefully.

Especially when it’s raining, driving around can get dangerous.

If you would like to rent a scooter on Koh Rong it usually costs between $15-$20 a day, which is definitely more expensive comparing the prices on the mainland in Cambodia.

EXTRA TIP: Make sure to bring your international driving license with you.

If you do not want to rent a scooter, you can also get around Koh Rong on foot or taking a boat. However, if you would like to go to the other side of the island by boat you need to consider the weather as well.

If you’re coming to Koh Rong, you need to know that there are two seasons. The dry season starts from December till March. This is where you have less rain and sunny days. The rainy season lasts from April till May.

Same as on Koh Kood Island in Thailand, Koh Rong has pleasant temperatures all year round which means 30 degrees, guaranteed. Nonetheless, during our visit, we were battling a lot with winds.

There are not so many hotels on Koh Rong island, so we suggest you book your accommodation in advance.

You can either go for budget hotels (bungalows) or stay at several luxury resorts, such as Anaya Koh Rong or even more luxurious The Royal Sands Koh Rong. Cambodia’s approach to tourism is not that sophisticated, but developing and getting better.

We highly recommend staying at Coconut Beach as it is very quiet and gives you enough time to relax. We stayed at the Nice Beach Bungalow and the only thing which was very disappointing was the food in the restaurant. Very small portions and everything took forever.

If you stay at White Beach you are safe from being stranded, but you need to know that there are many bars and hotels around, and probably you won’t find it very peaceful.

So I guess, next time we would stay at Scarlet Sails Resort, which is located on 4K beach. It has affordable rooms, a peaceful atmosphere and you can reach the main pier on foot.

If you would like to visit Cambodia, you need to get a tourist visa. Either at the capital of Cambodia Phnom Penh or at Siem Reap. The tourist visa is for 30 days and costs $35 per person.

You can either apply for a visa online or once you land in Cambodia. Make sure to bring a passport photo. The whole Visa process took about 20 minutes. You can check for more information on online E-visas here.

I will never forget how tense we were at the airport at Phnom Penh, as we heard some creepy stories about toursit getting ripped off at the borders. Especially when tourists cross overland to Cambodia. We read that the officers were charging more money from tourists that they were supposed to. However, luckily that didn’t happen to us.

  • SUN LOTION: To protect our reefs and marina life choose a lotion that is chemical-free. We use Raw elements and we love it (use Gigi10 for 10% off)
  • WATERPROOF BACKPACK: Ferries are usually small and often with open windows so the water can go in. This is to help you to protect your belonging and gear from splashing water.
  • SAND FREE TOWEL: We love to use Tesalate beach towels as they are light, absorbent and most importantly sand-free.
  • LONG SLEEVE PANTS AND SHIRTS: I always have something long on me especially when traveling in minibusses and battling with freezing Aircons.
