HOW TO GET TO PINK BEACH IN INDONESIA?

If you would like to visit Pink Beach in Indonesia, then you are in the right place. The true gateway to the pink beach is a small touristy town called Labuan Bajo that is located in the west of Flores Island in the Eastern part of Indonesia. We flew with NamAir from Bali and we paid $90 per person for return tickets.

The best way how to get to Labuan Bajo is to fly. Labuan Bajo has a small airport and you can reach it easily from Bali or Jakarta. Labuan Bajo lies at the coast near Komodo National park, and it is famous for scuba diving or swimming with manta rays.

WHERE EXACTLY IS PINK BEACH NEAR LABUAN BAJO?

Indonesia is a huge country with over 17.000 islands so probably there are many pink beaches.

There are several pink beaches in Komodo National Park, but the one which stands out the most is the pink beach on Bidadari Island.

Most of the travelers end up at the Pink beach which is at the Komodo island. Check the map here.

There is also a pink beach on Padar Island. Padar is really incredible as you can see from the top of Padar island three types of beaches: pink, white and black.

But, where is exactly the secret pink beach we are talking about?

The pink beach we visited is located very close to Labuan Bajo. It is not even that far and takes about 40 mins by boat from Labuan Bajo. The good news is, that not many people come here.

Have a look at that map below and zoom in where exactly the secret pink beach is located.

DO I NEED A TOUR TO GET TO PINK BEACH IN LABUAN BAJO?

The only way how to reach the secret pink beach is by boat, so you need to take an island hopping tour. You can either join a standard tour or organize a private tour.

However, we think that the only way how to see the secret pink beach is to organize a private island hopping tour. If you take a standard tour, then this one will probably take you to another pink beach which is located on Komodo Island.

There are many tour companies in Labuan Bajo with many tour opportunities. However, we decided to book our tour in the tourist information office (you can find them Google Maps).

Lonely Planet gave them a great review so we gave it a go. We absolutely loved it, especially our guide Emanuel who made sure we had the best time.

THE SCHEDULE OF THE TOUR:

  • RINCA ISLAND (2-3 hours)
  • KELOR ISLAND (1 hour)
  • BIDADARI ISLAND & PINK BEACH ( 1 hour)
  • 2 HOURS TO GET BACK TO LABUAN BAJO

The secrete pink beach was our last stop on our unforgettable Komodo tour around Flores. We started very early in the morning and we decided to go for a private tour, as it is really affordable and gives you an opportunity to customize your day the way you like. It is a full-day tour, so expect to start at 9 AM and you finish your day with the sunset on the boat (about 6:30 PM).

The tour includes lunch as well, so don’t worry that you will be hungry.

We first stopped at Rinca Island which is around 2.5 hours boat ride from Labuan Bajo. Here we saw several Komodo dragons and learned more about their lifestyle from a guide (you cannot walk around on your own on Rinca island but you need to “book” a professional guide).

After that, we stopped at Kelor Island and we had around 1 hour here. It is a small island, and there is not much you can do except for snorkeling and admiring the views.

It takes around 30 mins from Kelor Island to reach a secret pink beach on Bidadari Island. We had around 1 hour and we used it mostly for snorkeling. It is really incredible how beautiful marine life is. You literally just walk 2 meters from the shore and the corals are there.

CAN YOU STAY OVERNIGHT ON THE PINK BEACH?

Absolutely yes! Can you imagine waking up next to the pink beach? And most importantly, having the pink beach just to your self? There is only one hotel located on Bidadari island called Angel Island Resort, and you are welcomed to book your stay in paradise.

However, it is a “little bit” overpriced.

WHY IS THE PINK BEACH PINK?

I also wondered how come the beach is so pink. If you look closely at the sand you will see many pinky sells, and corals. But the reason why this beach has pink color is due to cute teeny tiny animals called Foraminifera that have calcium carbonate in their body. Because of the calcium carbonate their shells are pink.

PS: Please do not take any shells and sand from the beach. Imagine everyone would do that?

IS VISITING PINK BEACH WORTH IT?

Absolutely! We had no idea that there is some secret pink beach near Labuan Bajo and we are very happy that we went. It is a truly pristine place (or it was for us). And luckily we were there the only people on the beach which was absolutely awesome to enjoy this paradise alone.

IS PINK BEACH NEAR LABUAN BAJO DIRTY?

When we visited, we didn’t see any trash on the beach. The secret pink beach is part of the national park which is protected (or should be). However, a year later we saw some photos from the other pink beach at Komodo National park and were shocked how dirty it got. It was full of plastic and a lot of other rubbish.

I guess, due to people’s ignorance and laziness there is a lot of trash as no one takes responsibility to clean it. But I think it can be tricky during and after rainy season because a lot of trash is coming from China (and other parts of the world) and unfortunately, a lot of trash ends up on the shores.

WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU

It is a long fun day on the sea. There are few things which you shold have with you.

SUNSCREEN: Super important! Make sure to use good sun cream not to get burnt. The boar is cover so you do not need to worry about gett sunburnt on the boat, but there is not so much shade on the Rinca Island. We use Raw Elements that is 100% natural and chemical-free and that means they don’t harm the ocean (use Gigi10 for 10% off )

EARPLUGS: Okay, I know this might sound strange. Why the hell do I need earplugs on a snorkeling trip? Well, it takes around 2.5 hours to get to Rinca, which means you will spend in a total of 5 hours on the boat. The problem with these boats is that they are very loud, we call them helicopter boats. I hope they find a way to make the boats a bit less noisy. But I guess it’s part of the drill.

WATER: Don’t forget to bring enough water to stay hydrated.

SWIMWEAR: Absolutely must for your snorkelling adventures and swimming in warm turquoise waters.

WATERPROOF BACKPACK: In order to protect your belongings and gear, make sure to bring with you a waterproof pack. If it’s windy, waves get bigger and you might get some unpredictable splash on the boat.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT PINK BEACH?

If you want to make sure that the pink beach looks really pinky then it would be best to visit on a sunny day. That’s why we recommend to come during the dry season which is from April till the end of September and avoid the rainy season.

WHERE TO STAY IN LABUAN BAJO?

Labuan Bajo is a touristy town and there are several places you can stay in. Most of the places are very affordable and all located in the “city center”.

We stayed in a cute place called Le Pirate which was in the heart of Labuan Bajo.

There is also a floating Le pirate boat hotel which is, as you guessed it, a boat floating on the sea. I definitely would like to go there next time we visit Labuan Bajo. The rooms for the floating hotel are a bit more expensive as the one in town, but it must be beautiful waking up with the sunrise.

Have a look at all hotels in Labuan Bajo.

That is all from us. We hope that you will have a great time exploring Flores and Komodo National Park. Pink beach on Bidadari Island near Labuan Bajo is truly incredible and we are happy we included it on our Indonesia itinerary.
